This is the classic “daisy chain.” While it might seem like a clever way to get more sockets, it’s one of the most common causes of electrical fires. Each wall socket is rated for a maximum load (typically 13 amps). When you chain extension leads, it’s incredibly easy to plug in enough appliances to exceed that limit. The lead at the front of the chain is forced to carry the entire load, causing it to overheat, melt, and potentially ignite.
Overloaded extension leads are a sign that your workspace has outgrown its electrical infrastructure.
Those brown scorch marks are a major red flag. They are evidence of arcing—where electricity is jumping across a small gap due to a poor connection. This creates intense, localised heat. It’s often caused by a loose wire inside the plug or a worn-out wall socket that can no longer grip the plug pins tightly. High-power appliances like kettles, microwaves, and toasters are the most common culprits because they draw a lot of current, which exacerbates any poor connection.
Communal kitchens are high-risk zones. Appliances are used frequently and often with less care than personal items.
This is a double-danger exhibit. Firstly, the tape is hiding the original damage—a cracked casing or a split cable that could expose live internal parts. Secondly, it’s often a sign of a cheap, counterfeit charger. These chargers frequently lack the essential safety components (like proper insulation and transformers) that protect the user from the full 230V mains voltage. They are a significant fire and electric shock risk.
Employee-owned electricals are a major compliance headache, but you are still responsible for ensuring they don’t create a hazard in your workplace.
This is the humble IEC lead, the power cord for almost every PC, monitor, and printer. It’s also one of the most abused and overlooked items in any office. Constant physical stress from being crushed under desks, trapped in drawers, or bent at sharp angles breaks down the cable’s internal insulation. This can lead to a short circuit or, worse, cause the live wire to make contact with a metal desk leg, making the entire desk live.
Good cable management isn’t just about looking tidy; it’s a critical safety measure.
This is one of the most dangerous “invisible” faults. It looks fine from the outside, but it’s a serious fire risk. The rule is simple: the fuse protects the cable. A thin lamp flex is only designed to handle a small current (around 3 amps). If a fault occurs, this oversized 13-amp fuse will allow a huge amount of current to flow through the thin cable. The cable will overheat, melt its insulation, and catch fire long before the fuse even considers blowing.
This highlights the absolute necessity of a competent inspector.
